staff & contributor bios Tom Wszalek, Publisher Arlene Wszalek, Editor and Associate Publisher Tom and Arlene (yes, they're married) share an abiding interest in wine, food, and travel. Longtime Southern California residents, they began traveling regularly to England and France for pleasure (and a bit of business) in the 1980s. Eventually it occurred to them that it would be much easier to visit European vineyards if they already LIVED across the Atlantic. A business opportunity took them to London in 1995, and they stayed for four years. During that time they frequently visited the wine regions of France, Italy, and Spain (among many other places). The Wszaleks regularly supplement their wine education by taking classes, visiting wineries, talking with wine makers, sommeliers, and merchants, and reading voraciously. They think the best way to learn about wines is to simply try them, and they entertain regularly in their Los Angeles-area home, sharing meals and bottles with like-minded friends. In addition to Swirl, Arlene is the Wine and Spirits Editor for Luxury Living magazine, and Tom and Arlene write a monthly column for Patterson's Beverage Journal, California's foremost publication for beverage professionals. Tom currently serves on the Slow Food Los Angeles Wine Committee; and Arlene is on the organizing committee for "Vintage Hollywood," an annual tasting event that benefits Caring for Children and Families with AIDS. Before founding Swirl in 2002, Tom spent over two decades as an executive with Mattel Toys, The Walt Disney Company and Radical Communication (now part of Avalon Digital Marketing Systems, Inc.). Arlene was part of the launch team for AOL UK, and before that held management positions with DIC Entertainment and Ogilvy & Mather Advertising. In 1999 they founded a consultancy, SW14 Group LLC, to advise media, entertainment, and technology companies on business strategy. Swirl, which merges their personal and professional passions, is an evolutionary offshoot of that enterprise. Tom and Arlene say that Swirl's true inspiration lies not with their base of knowledge about wine, but with the recognition of what they don't yet know, and their desire to share that journey of neverending curiosity about wine with readers across the globe.
